Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay grew up with her aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to be creative and drawn by art. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was moral compass and urged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was born together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time they spent there to help in her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was drawn to the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash at the residence by a member jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism, and she decided to pursue a career in the public relations business. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small just after she had graduated from the college. She launched in 1999 her own private company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The agency has launched a wide range of networks for promotion and lifestyle which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
